Reduced Size 'Phase Of Play' - Combining To Finish With A Forward Three

Picture
Reduced size ‘Phase of Play’ using 12 outfield players and 1 keeper on 3/4's of a pitch.

The aim is to feed balls into the front three and work on their movement and combination play to finish.

Set-Up

The defensive side line up as a back four with two midfielders in front.
The attacking side line up with a front three and one attacking midfielder.

The ball is feed in from one of the three players between the cone gates, into the feet of one of the forward three, who combine to finish. At this stage feeders do not support play.

FIRST PHASE

Coaching points:
·         Width and depth from the front three. Wingers hug the chalk and centre-forward pushes high up against the back four
·         Movement and communication to create space and isolate defenders
·         When to shot, when to pass
·         Support play, third man running from attacking midfielder

Managing the defensive unit:
The Defensive Unit has 10 passes when the ball is retrieved, to work it back through the far gates. You need to keep them interested and keep things realistic, even though you are working on attacking principles.

PROGRESSION

Now we release the feeders to support once the ball is feed in.

Coaching points:
·         Developing wide play
·         What are the roles of our the feeders?
o   Overlaps, underlaps to support winger
o   When to support, when to cover
            o   End product
            o   Can we recycle/Switch play
o   Defensive lock-in of central feeder and far-side fullback as play develops down the far wing.
·         Movement of centre forward
o   How to create space for winger on the ball. Can we help isolate him one on one with his fullback.
o   Support in behind, can we support and create space for second winger and midfielder to attack – ‘Third man running’ .
            o   Movement, timing of runs.
o   End product. Can we create chances, can we finish.
