The Squad

We don't see ourselves as a First Team, Reserves and a Youth set-up. We're 'One Club' and 'One Squad'. Pen Pics on all the players to follow shortly. In the meantime, here's a few to get you started.
Picture

Matt Crutwell - Goalkeeper

Nickname = Cruts
Previous Clubs = Lewis and Whitehawk
Distinctive trait = His sharp wit and atrocious dress sense.

Barely out of nappies but arguably the best goalkeeper in the league last season. One of the new generation who was baptised into senior football last term; only just 17 and now dual signed with Whitehawk of the Ryman League and a member of the Sussex u18s squad. A young man with a very bright future in front of him but atrocious dress sense.
Picture

Ashley 'Teeth' Paine - Centreback

Nickname = Teeth
Previous Clubs = Hastings United
Distinctive trait = The ‘I’m enjoying life’ attitude, which Bally’s such a big fan of!

Deceptively strong and tough in the tackle and brings a lot of pace to the middle of the defence. Ash was one of the standout performers last season. Still a youngster himself and already this year he has started to demonstrated the qualities that make him one of the best centre-backs in the league. He’s also the man who so far this year pushed Bally closest to ‘the point of no return’ with his legendary ‘I’m just enjoying life’ comment. Priceless!
Picture

Tom 'TA' Archer

Nickname = TA
Previous Clubs = Westfield ‘Lifer’
Distinctive trait = Gray haired ‘wooing’ master!

The gray haired, gentle giant of Westfield, who has worked his way up through the reserves to become one of the central cogs in the backline. His strength in the air and calm head make him an invaluable member of the squad. A nicer guy you’re not likely to meet. He’s a man of few words who’s wooing talents have become a thing of legend.
Picture

Dave 'Question Time' Seymour

Nickname = Question Time
Previous Clubs = Hastings United u18s
Distinctive trait = Ridiculous hair and Mensa like IQ

Without doubt the most sensible and intelligent player to ever grace the Parish Field. Maybe best described by one first team member when he said ‘he has to be the stupidest clever person I know’. Part of the ‘New Generation’; a supreme defensive talent who also holds the record for the greatest ever reason for missing training, ‘Sorry gentlemen, I won’t be able to make training tonight as I’m on Question Time.’ To be fair it wouldn’t have been a shock to see him on the panel. Notably he sports the second worst haircut in the squad, behind only JB.
Picture

Jack Stapley - Centreback

Nickname = Jess’s boyfriend
Previous Clubs = Hastings United u18s
Distinctive trait = His Mrs!

A born leader. Full of grit and determination and a player who shined in pre-season. Jack is one of the new generation who Dunc, Tone and Matt recruited last season. Somewhat over-shadowed last year by the more creative additions like Sam, Jim, Joe and Birdie but this year we have seen him quickly establishing himself at the heart of the backline. His performances against Hastings United and Midhurst showed with crystal clarity how valuable he is to the team and how much potential he possesses. A lovely guy off the pitch who unfortunately suffers from a similar disease to the ‘Ginger Genius’, if he learns to keep a lid on his temper and continues to mature as a player then he has very big things in front of him.
Picture

Sean 'Peanut' Smith - Fullback

Nickname - Peanut
Previous Clubs - None
Distinctive Trait - His love of 'Baccccccaaaaa'

Sean is a player who has been on the periphery of the first team for a few years now. He is aggressive and has pace to burn. Needs to work on his final ball but has the potential and desire to learn and improve. He’s a key member of the first team and with the new breed around him it could be a big year.

Picture

David 'Windy' Miller - Fullback - Vice Captain

Nickname = Windy
Previous Clubs = Westfield ‘Lifer’.
Distinctive trait = ‘Tourettes’ like outbursts at his own mistakes on the pitch. Highly irritating.

A born and breed Westfield lad who wears his heart on his sleeve. He has pace to burn and is frightening when running at players. Windy came into his owe last year as he took on the responsibility of the Captains armband due to Bakes’ prolonged absence through injury. He was nothing short of a revelation. His maturity on the pitch helped guide the younger players through their development but the value he brought with his personality in the dressing room couldn’t be underestimated. He’s a born leader and a hugely important part of the management trio’s set-up.

Ross 'Rosco' Williams - FullBack

Nickname = The ‘Ross-a-tron’
Previous Clubs = Product of the youth set-up
Distinctive trait = Lanky, bordering on being ‘Slinky’!

A young man who the management trio are all incredibly proud of and who, more than anyone, personifies their ethos. Ross was a member of a struggling  u18 side who had to endure an incredibly tough time over the last few seasons. But thanks to the incredibly attitude and application of players like Ross they have grown into a unit that will challenge for the league this year. Ross’ is a young player with great drive, vision and technical ability. A centre midfielder who the management trio quickly identified with the attributes to become a standout centre-half and with several accomplished displays in preseason, in which he displayed his maturity and versatility, he has started the season as the front-side’s first choice left back. His development is the perfect example of everything Tony, Duncan and Matt strive to achieve with their players. A cracking lad and one with a very bright future. Westfield is very much the first step on the ladder for a very talented footballer.

Lee Wood - Centreback

Nickname = Woody
Previous Clubs = St. Leonards Stamco, Sidley United, Little Common
Distinctive trait = Mr Nice

A Westfield legend and one of the best defenders in County League football over the last decade. He reads the game better than any defender I’ve worked with and don’t be fooled by the ‘nice guy’ persona, on the pitch Woody is aggressive, competitive and a nightmare to play against.

Ben Ridgeway - Centreback

Nickname = Ridge
Previous Clubs = Rye United
Distinctive trait = ‘Daniel Agger-like’ strikes from distance, just minus the accuracy!

Ben is in his second stint with the club. After an impressive first season with Westfield he attracted attention from local rivals, Rye United and moved across to the Salts. Ben was welcomed back to the club at the tail end of last season and is a huge addition to the side. A formidable presence at the heart of any defence, he’s a centreback with great feet and vision who loves to step out of the back four.

Sam 'Tex' Henham

Nickname - Tex
Previous Clubs - Hastings United
Distinctive Trait - The Henham brothers trademark  confidence and his range of passing

Tex has come in as a late addition to the squad. A young man who is on loan form Hastings United. He has his brother Dave's swagger and confidence both off the pitch and on the ball. Whilst sometimes he borders on cocky, he's an intelligenty who listens and wants to learn and improve. He came to the club as a centre midfielder but a combination of how his technical abilities, readiing of the game and the way the trio want to play has seen him converted to a ball playuing centreback who loves to step out of the back four. He's a player with a bright future.
Picture

Jim 'Gatch' Gatcum - Centre Midfield

Nickname = Gatch, ‘The Ginger Genius’, Harold or just ‘Idiot’
Previous Clubs = Hastings United u18s
Distinctive trait = He’s a total juvenile

The ginger Tasmanian devil and young pretender to Tony Harris's crown as the drive in the middle of the park. A stream of accomplished performances last season showed why the management were correct in identifying him as the engine room of the new side. Off the pitch, in tandem with Birdie, who plays ‘Kumar’ to his ‘Harold’, he’s a joker, a nuisance and at the centre of everything. The boy is a menace. Infuriating, almost impossible to control on the training pitch and he tops the list of ‘People Bally is most likely to kill before the season is out’. If he can keep a lid on his temperamental outbursts on the pitch he won’t be with us for much longer as the vultures have already begun to circle. However, he shows a loyalty to his team and the management trio that is incredibly rare in non-league football today.

Khaya Nyathi - Centre Midfielder

Nickname = King (Christ knows why?)
Previous Clubs - Hastings Youth
Distinctive Trait - Stupid haircuts and a ridiculous amount of self belief

To confident, to intelligent and to skilful for his own good! I'd love to try and bring him down a peg or two with a few witty, scathing and pithy comments but the problem is that no matter how irritating the little man can be you just can't help but love the diminutive chap. His skill and technical ability at the start of the season, when he was brought onboard, was never in doubt but the speed at which he could be brought through and introduced to senior football was a question for the trio. Their concerns were very quickly put to bed with a host of impressive performances in pre-season and a cameo against the strong and physical Storrington away, who had to resort to lashing out in an attempt to shackle him. Westfield’s very own 'Messi' in the making? IN HIS DREAMS MAYBE! But with his skill on the ball and his 'Weeble like' ability to continually ride and pop back up from the physical attention he's receiving, there's definitely a few comparisons.

Gordon Cuddington - Centre Midfield

Nickname = Still to be baptised!
Previous Clubs = Bexhill United
Distinctive trait = Ridiculous fitness levels and holder of the 2.5 minute crown.

The first of the new arrivals to the side this season. A player quickly identified and added to the ‘wanted list’ early on last season by the management trio. His attitude, age and attributes dovetailed perfectly with the trio’s ethos and the areas of the squad, which required strengthening. Unshackled quickly by Tone, Dunc and Matt and given a freedom to drive, which he never had at Bexhill where he was wrongly restricted to a defensive midfielder role. His drive and third man running have caused problems for defences all pre-season and saw him open his account on the opening day of the season. He is a work-horse in the middle of the park but one with excellent technique and the knack of arriving in the box at the right time. He’s quickly becoming a Parish Field favourite and along with Sam, Jim and Sando creates a central combination as good as any in football at this level.

Chris Sanderson - Centre Midfielder

Nickname = Sando
Previous Clubs = Hastings United u18s, Bexhill United
Distinctive trait = Fantastic passing ability and phenomenally fitness levels????!!!!

Another of the new additions this season. A player the trio wanted on board last year but he made the ridiculous decision of moving to rivals Bexhill. A shinning display against us at home last year showed perfectly why the boys had gone after him. His vision, quick movement of the ball and range of passing make him a real asset to the side and he brings a style of play that has been missing from the team. A ‘point man’ who makes things tick, very much in the style of Chris Smith who was such a talented player for Westfield. Sando suffered a long layoff through injury last season but hopefully with a careful regime and the constant supervision of ‘Dutch’ we’ll very quickly start to see the best from a player who has huge potential.
Picture

Roberto 'Birdy' Martellini - Winger/Centre Forward

Nickname = Birdie, Kumar or Idiot Number 2
Previous Clubs = Hastings United u18s
Distinctive trait = Stupid beard, Italian tantrums and generally being a nuisance!

‘Kumar’ to Jim’s ‘Harold’. The pair when together, which is virtually always as they’re joined at the hip, are a nightmare but what they’re antics bring to the table off the pitch and on the training ground is a big part of what makes this team such a joy to work with, Birdie has helped create an atmosphere that is second to none in comparison to all the teams I’ve been involved with. As a player, when on song, he’s unplayable. When Birdie switches on, moves the ball quickly and is incisive with his play he quickly becomes one of the best attacking players in the league.
Picture

Martin 'Get that away from me' Brain - Centre Midfield

Nickname - Brainy or 'Baby's Arm'
Previous Clubs - None
Distinctive Trait - This is a fmaily website so....

Spent a season in the shadows of more senior players last year but in pre-season has demonstrated very quickly how and why he has managed to make Jonesy's converted 8 shirt his own. Great vision, and a composure on the ball beyond his years, Brainy has set himself high standards, ones which we expect him to maintain throughout the year.

Picture

Sam Willet - Centre Midfield

Nickname = Willett
Previous Clubs = Hastings u18s
Distinctive trait = Irritatingly good footballing knowledge and great timing in the tackle!!!!

One of the new generation and foundations of this young side the trio have created. Incredibly talented technically and possesses an excellent footballing brain. Intelligent on the ball but industrious off it, Sam quickly last season became the attacking force in the Willett/Gatcum pairing. Usually takes up the advanced role in the new midfield trio and his movement and third-man running are quickly becoming one of the signatures of this Westfield side. Highly critical of himself and was the first to admit with the arrival of Gordon and Sando and the return to full fitness of Ringers, his position in the line-up was and is, no means guaranteed (he’ll take some shifting though). Off the pitch, he gets away with murder. An instigator who usually winds up Jim and Birdie and then takes a back seat and watches the havoc unravel!

Brad Owens - Centre Midfielder

Nickname = Tevez
Previous Clubs = To young to have any, he’s barely out of nappies!
Distinctive trait = The ‘Duracell Bunny’-esc work rate

Quiet, unassuming and bordering on shy off the pitch, the young lad is a pleasure to work with. On it he’s been a revelation. Brought in as a player expected to strengthen the u18s and become accustomed to senior football in the reserves, however his performances in pre-season have led to him already forcing his way into the front-side and making his first team debut. On the training ground he is a model player and on the pitch his industry, tenacity and technique are quickly demonstrating why the trio are so excited by this young prospect.

Steve Ringwood - Midfielder

Nickname = Ringers, Spliffy
Previous Clubs = Hastings United
Distinctive trait = The scruffy laid back approach and the legendary Ringwood step over

It’s difficult to know where to start with Ringers, he’s a Westfield Legend who is returning to the Club after an incredibly successful time with Hastings United in the Ryman league. Other than being quite simply the nicest guy you are ever likely to meet he is also simply the most skilful winger I’ve ever seen in a Westfield shirt. However, his time at Hastings United saw him converted to a holding midfield role where his quickness of thought, distribution, speed on the ball and ‘give and go’ style have seen him reinvented as a player. A huge addition to this young team; both his experience on the pitch and his personality off it are priceless to the trio.
Picture

Joe 'JB' Barham - Centre Forward

Nickname = JB, Hair
Previous Clubs = Hastings United u18s
Distinctive trait = The constant hair fiddling and the ridiculously quick feet.

Quite simply one of the most talented and at the same time, frustrating players I have ever worked with. If we can find the key to his consistency Joe could be playing football at whatever level he chooses, he’s that gifted. His footwork on the ball can be electric and much like Birdie, when he’s on song, he’s unplayable as Midhurst found out to their detriment early in the season. The constant hair flicking has lead to Bally threatening to shave his head and his laid back attitude, very similar to Mr Paine’s, borders ludicrous. Yet the lad is a mercurial talent, which hopefully the fans will see more clearly this season.
Picture

Peter 'Spider Pig' Baker - Centre Forward - Club Captain

Nickname = Bakes, Spider-Pig
Previous Clubs = Rye Unites, St. Leonards Stamco, Sidley United, Eastbourne Borough
Distinctive trait = Takes an ‘ok’ free-kick

Bakes falls into exactly the same bracket as Ringers in that it’s difficult to know where to begin. This little profile could go on and on for a player who has scored goals consistently at every level of non-league football becoming a household name in the area. His legs may be beginning to fail him, but what little pace he has lost (didn’t really have much in the first place) he more than makes up for with his vision, experience and distribution. He’s Club Captain and I’d love to be able to say he’s the fatherly figure in the dressing room but he’s a bigger kid than most of them. He strikes as clean a ball as you’ll see at any non-league level and the value of his delivery can never be underestimated.
Picture

Dave 'Pughie' Pugh

Nickname = Pughie
Previous Clubs = Bexhill
Distinctive trait = He scores goals!

The first time I saw him in training I thought someone was winding me up, as at first glance he looks nothing like a footballer. But put a ball at his feet and somehow everything changes. A natural eye for goal, which saw him just pipped at the post for the Golden Boot in his first season in senior football, and as a consequence the likes of Rye, Sidley, Uckfield and Hastings United quickly came calling. He can be lazy, sullen and frustrating but he is a player who has that rare knack of being in the right place at the right time. He’s surprisingly nimble on the turn, deceptively quick on the ball, and possesses the ability to create something out of nothing. A massive part of the new set-up and as popular off the pitch as he is on it.
